Position Title:           Project Environmental Scientist  

Position Location:    Akron, OH

Salary Range:            $50,000 - $60,000


Job Overview

We are seeking a qualified Environmental & Ecological Services Environmental Scientist to support projects in our Environmental and Ecological Client Service Group. Projects may include wetland and surface water assessments and delineations, Clean Water Act permitting (Section 401/404), compliance and audit programs, environmental assessments (EA/EIS), funding and implementation strategies, Phase I and II site assessments, remediation and restoration planning/design/oversight, and material reuse regulation and permitting.

As a Project Professional at Environmental Design Group you will:


  • Assist with various site assessments and complete the required reports and permits including: wetland and surface water assessments and delineations, ESA Screenings, Phase I and Phase II ESAs; National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) assessments; and construction and post-construction monitoring.
  • Complete required regulatory permits including Clean Water Act (401/404) permit application materials.
  • Conduct field data collection, monitoring, and reporting activities including wetland and stream mitigation monitoring and reporting, storm water evaluations and compliance reporting (NPDES), and stream and wetland data collection and documentation.
  • Assist with implementing Phase I and Phase II ESA investigations including: hand auger sampling logging soil borings, collecting soil and ground water samples, and preparing samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Actively engage in all assigned projects including coordinating subcontractor work as necessary to complete environmental studies; participating in meetings with client and regulatory agencies; and assisting with the review of plans to identify permit compliance issues.
  • Identify and refer new business opportunities by developing and maintaining positive relationships with existing and prospective clients, and participating in client events and industry associations.
  • Have technical competency in areas of project development.
  • Adhere to and train Associates on all quality and safety protocols.
  • Actively engage in assigned projects including preparing proposals, project planning documents, and budgets; designing systems for projects using manual techniques and computer programs; calculating and checking project quantities and cost estimates; preparing applications for project permitting and coordinating approvals with regulatory agencies; monitoring project budgets, reporting results to the project manager, identifying and developing strategies to complete the project within budget; recommending project plan changes when needed; assisting with construction observation to ensure work is in compliance with design specifications; preparing reports for distribution to management, clients, and reviewing agencies; serving as assistant project manager as needed; maintaining contact with clients, regulatory agencies, and other outside groups as delegated by project manager.
  • Collaborate and regularly communicate with Project Manager and other project staff on status of work, deliverables, schedule, and budgets; supervise the work of other professionals to complete project documentation, provide basic direction and input, monitor quality, and ensure on-time completion of work.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with existing and prospective clients; participate in client events, community boards and organizations and industry associations; participate in public meetings including delivery of presentations as requested.


  • Education: Bachelor of Science Degree
  • Experience: 5+ years
  • Certifications: Qualification as an Environmental Professional and Certification through Ohio Department of Natural Resources or Ohio Environmental Protection Agency as a subject matter expert is preferred but not required.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office, ARC GIS, use of Trimble or similar GPS equipment, and other industry-based software is required. Advanced training in stream, wetland, and plant identification is required.

  • Excellent leadership and organizational skills in a team-oriented environment.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Work hours are typically 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional evening work may be required as job duties demand.



Travel is primarily local during the business day, but travel may extend to 25% out of town during work weeks depending upon job and project requirements.


Supervisor Responsibility

This position does not supervise any staff.
